Building a Website - What You Shouldn't Be Doing

For all of the good website ideas that you might encounter you'll come around with bad website ideas that are going to be just as common and prevalent online. If you know how not to build a website then you should be able to design a site that you will be able to take pride in. You'll also, as a result, get more returning visitors to your site.

The first of the bad website ideas you should avoid is that of using background music on the site. While this can be useful for a website that is dedicated to a band or something musically related, this should not be used if music is not going to be involved on your site. Not only will it make the visitor to your page find you to be unprofessional but it will also take a good amount of time for the page to load. This will only make it harder for the rest of the page to load as a result. Some people might not even have the plug-ins required in order to hear the files and downloading them can take time as well.

You should also not have any unusual or unconventional fonts on your site. The font that you use will say volumes about your site so it will be better to use a font that is formal and easy to read. The same goes for the font size. You should not be using a font size that is too small or large so that it will either be hard to read or look unprofessional.

The third of the bad website ideas to watch for is that of using popup ads on the site. This is one of the things you should definitely avoid because these ads can be seen as distractions to your visitors. It will also take far longer for your site to load because a completely new process of opening up a window to display an advertisement will begin and new information that is not relevant to your site will consequently be loaded up.

This will also be the case for when you are working on helping to get people to access parts of your site. You should avoid having information which is vital to your site popping up in a separate browser. Not only will it take longer to load because of the new browser opening but some people sometimes have popup blockers that prevent these from coming up. This can therefore hurt your site's accessibility.

These are all ideas that show how you should not build a website. Whether it be using background music, using unusual fonts and font sizes or using popups you should always avoid these ideas so that your site will be most accessible and professional.
